Long time, no update! A couple new domains have been added to the server:

Randy Ocken

Thomas Training

Not much else is new...

New server has been working great! If you use WinSCP or PuTTY, you may need to download a newer version for it to authenticate correctly.

Thanks to Ben for a hot tip on webmail redirection, typing in http://mail.distanthaze.com should get you to the right place now.

It's Stu!

I am still going crazy reconfiguring everything, but most of the vital services should be up and running normally.

Leo has been retired. One of the drives didn't spin back up after it was shut down. Guess it was time for a new server!

Stu is a dual 800mhz PIII with 3 36G 10,000 rpm Seagate Cheetah drives in a RAID 5.

I've been looking at OS's and distributions of Linux for a replacement of RedHat 7.2 on the server. So far I loaded FreeBSD, Solaris for x86, Fedora Linux, and Gentoo Linux. I am fairly impressed with Gentoo, and the software is updated quite often. That is probably what I will use when I revamp the server.

I am still undecided on hardware. I have my Kayak, which is doing the job just fine, but then I have a server chassis that I saved from the trash that would be nice too. I don't think that the board from teh Kayak will fit in the server chassis, but I will probably try.

I will probably shutdown the server for a while one of these nights to look at the board and reset the UPS, it will be the first time the server has been rebooted since October 2002.

Wow. Been a while for news.

Anyway...

Been having problems with the battery backup on the server. The APC indicates that the battery needs to be replaced. I tried one we had laying around work, but it was worse than the one I have. I ran a calibration, and it seemed to hold for the normal amount of time, but it still fails the battery test. The uptime streak may be coming to a close!

I have also been looking at a distro to update the server with when I do finally reboot. Fedora looks okay, but I have found a few bugs--at least on the desktop side. I think I want to wait and see how the Redhat/Fedora thing shakes out before I get too excited. Might have to switch distros!

I am also looking into getting a raid cage for the server. I have seen a few that fit into 2 or 3 large bays--could be interesting to fit one into the Kayak chassis.
